THE SYRACUSE NEW HORIZONS ENSEMBLES
FOR ADULTS AND HIGH SCHOOL HOMESCHOOLERS

Every Thursday, from 12:30 until 2:30, musicians with flutes, string instruments, percussion and brass gather to play music together. The group loves the music they are making and wants to share this joy with others. The group is open to homeschoolers who have reached at least the 3rd grade level of playing their instrument. Appropriate instruments would be all woodwinds, brass and percussion instruments. We are also inviting experienced violin, viola, cello and bass players. Our string players have been meeting additionally to play chamber music.

This ensemble is the Syracuse chapter of the New Horizons International Music Association, a movement that began at the Eastman School of Music in 1991. Although it began as an activity for adults over 50, many groups welcome all ages, particularly homeschool students, who can use this activity to fulfill their music education requirement. Today, there are over 200 chapters in the United States and there are also groups in several other countries. Many groups are traditional bands. Some chapters have orchestras and choruses as well. Some even have steel drum bands! The Syracuse chapter started right here at the Greater Syracuse School of Music, under the direction of Don Goodness, who demonstrates great expertise leading New Horizons ensembles, having founded and directed the Oswego chapter for many years.

This is a wonderful intergenerational activity. Both the youth and adults benefit greatly from playing music together. The music covers a large scope from Broadway show tunes, to ragtime, classical, Latin and promises to venture into other music venues. Call 243-7716 and sign up for what will turn out to be your favorite part of every week!

MUSIC STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

At the Greater Syracuse School of Music, everyone is welcomed and encouraged to find their musical voice, their way to express themselves through the art of music.

One of our teachers, Chad Seeber, took music therapy courses in college and won a community service award for his work with students who have special needs. Chad is gifted at helping his students to succeed because of his strong belief in each person's ability to be creative in the area of music making. Using his guitar, percussion, piano, and singing voice, the music lessons are enjoyable for children and adults.

Call 243-7716 today to register for private lessons with Chad.
