What will it be like when I go to The Greater Syracuse School of Music?
First of all, someone will always greet you with a smile because we are genuinely glad to see our students each week. It’s a happy place to be where people are learning to do something wonderful: to make music! This is an activity that will give you a lifetime of joy.

Who are the teachers and where do they come from?
The teachers all live in the area. Some are music teachers who have their teaching degrees from music colleges. Some might be graduate students at local music colleges, but all are college educated, have been playing or singing music for a long time, are highly qualified to teach music and will love teaching you, whether you are a child, a teenager or an adult.

Who are the students?
The Greater Syracuse School of Music is a school for people from pre-school age through adulthood, right into retirement.

  • Pre-school students meet in small groups to develop their rhythm, coordination and love of music before they are old enough to take private lessons.
  • Some school age students are beginners while others might be preparing for NYSSMA, a school musical or even for a music college audition.
  • Adults are either returning to lessons that they began as youngsters or they are trying something brand new when time becomes available to venture into new activities.
  • Adults or teens who seek instruction in music theory, sight-singing, music composition or songwriting
  • Children and adults who are lving with some limitations and who desire music enrichment

How long does it take to learn an instrument?
After a couple of months, you or your child will be playing some songs that you recognize. The rate of each student’s progress depends on the person’s natural talent, the time they have available to devote to music, their commitment to practice and their ability to comprehend the concepts that are taught. In other words, progress differs from one person to another, but everyone can learn to make music. Most students take lessons for quite a few years because they want to improve and because they truly love their music lessons and find great enjoyment in making music on their own.

Are parents allowed to attend lessons with their child?
Absolutely! Occasionally you, your child or your teacher may want you to attend a lesson or two. Our teachers will always welcome your presence as an observer.

Do students have to practice at home?
As stated above, your commitment to regular practice affects your rate of progress. When you have practiced consistently and conscientiously during the week, the teacher can then take you to the next level in music. Otherwise, you will need to repeat the material from the previous lesson. You will quickly learn that it’s much more fun to prepare and move ahead. Being able to play music independently fosters self-confidence and is very satisfying.
